The premise of this movie is simple. You can live forever, but it has consequences and it always comes down to good versus evil. It is the story of Connor Macleod who was born in 1518 in Scotland. In 1536, after facing a mysterious, evil opponent, he survives a fatal stab wound and is banished from his village, for they believe his survival is the work of the Devil.
Five years later, Macleod is met by Ramirez (played by Sean Connery), an immortal swordsman who tells him the awful truth; he is immortal, one of a race of many who can only die when the head is cut from the body. When one immortal takes the head of another, the loser's power is absorbed into the winner.
After battling and surviving through the centuries, Connor must inevitably face the ultimate evil opponent Kurgan, an immortal brute who lusts for the ultimate power of the immortals, "The Prize"; enough power to rule the earth forever. The final battle takes place in modern day New York City where the winner takes all.
Spirited by a powerful music soundtrack that was written and performed by Queen, this movie was a box office hit, although it was panned by the critics.
The movie spawned five sequels, a TV series, a card game and video games. None of the sequels ever measured up to the original movie. The tagline, "There can be only one," and the songs written by Queen, were carried on throughout the franchise.
