Resurrection Mary

According to the drivers who have picked up this hitchhiking ghost, Resurrection Mary prefers to be dropped off at the main gates at Resurrection Cemetery.

Resurrection Mary is a well known hitchhiking ghost in the Chicago area. The story takes place outside Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Illinois.

Since the 1930s, people have reported picking up a young female hitchhiker while driving northeast along Archer Avenue between the Willowbrook Ballroom and Resurrection Cemetery. The young woman is said to be wearing a white party dress and has light blonde hair and blue eyes. Whenever the driver gets close to the Resurrection Cemetery, the young woman asks to be let out, where she then disappears into the cemetery.

Legend has it that Mary had been out dancing with a boyfriend at the O'Henry Ballroom, now the Willowbrook, when they got into an argument. Mary stormed out and started walking up Archer Avenue on the cold winter's night. She hadn't made it very far when she was struck and killed by a hit and run driver. Mary's body was buried in Resurrection Cemetery in a formal white dress.

In 1939, Jerry Palus claims he spent the evening dancing with a woman named Mary and later gave her a ride home. As they drove along Archer Avenue, Mary asked him to stop the car in front of the cemetery. She exited the vehicle and began walking toward the cemetery until she disappeared into the front gates.

Other sightings include a cab driver who reported a woman to police for not paying her fare because she disappeared from the taxi and still other drivers report striking a mysterious woman with their vehicles but a body is never found.

In 1976, one man reported seeing a woman locked in the cemetery while driving by. He reported it to the police who found no woman in the cemetery. What they did find were small handprints burned into the bars of the cemetery's front gates that had been inexplicably twisted.

Researchers have tried to link Resurrection Mary to the thousands of burials in the cemetery and have come up with a possible match. Many believe Mary could be a woman named Mary Bregovy, who died in a 1934 auto accident in the Chicago Loop.

Ursula Bielski, an author in Chicago documented a possible connection to Anna "Marija" Norkus, who died in a 1927 auto accident while on her way home from the O'Henry Ballroom.

According to a full-time ghost hunter, Richard Crowe there have been over 30 substantiated reports of Mary sightings from the 1930s to now.

Pre-Arrangement

Dying is one of the few events in life that's certain to occur, yet one we rarely plan for. Should we spend more time preparing for a two week vacation than we do our last days on Earth?
