The natural world is often seen as a villain during natural disasters, such as tsunami and hurricanes, but when man-made disasters take place nature can be used as a healing tool for many. In the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy, living memorials began to appear all over New York City and the world in the coming years.
Some people organized and began some inspiring works. In 2002 people in New York began to plant sunflowers anywhere they could find, sidewalk cracks, tree pots, and even window ledges while others built community gardens or memorial tree settings with benches and art painted onto interlocking brick.
These memorials can change in time as people build up connections to these places and begin to memorialize others in these centres.
