In the past cremated remains were either buried, kept in an urn or similar container or placed in a columbarium. Today there are many new ways to allow you to memorialize and carry a remembrance of your loved one with you every day. These keepsakes also give you the chance to share your loved one with family members and close friends who have also been left behind.
Jewelry has taken on new meaning with the ability to purchase pendants, rings, bracelets and more in the shape of crosses, hearts, teardrops and even a favorite animal or musical instrument in which to place a portion of your loved one's ashes. They are available in precious metals, crystal, bejewelled or even simply hand crafted from wood. Many of the choices offer engraving, depending on the material, which adds to the personal nature of your choice. Each piece of jewelry is designed with a small compartment, about the size of an eraser on a pencil that holds a small portion of ashes. The compartment can be easily filled with small funnel and sealed with a slotted screw or plug. Most companies also supply a kit to facilitate the transfer of ashes. Your local funeral home or mortuary consultant will have samples and catalogues to help you make your choice.
