To have a burial, you need a burial plot. While this can be arranged through the funeral home at the time of death, it can also be done by yourself well ahead of time. It may be cheaper to do it on your own, but it will be much easier to handle if you purchase a plot through a funeral home.
1. Pick a cemetery first. Base your choice first on comparable prices, and then worry about aesthetics and location.
2. Ask the cemetery staff for a map to search for available plots, comparing pretty locations against those that are less aesthetically pleasing will save you lots of money.
3. Consider small mausoleums and cremation where available, they are often less expensive than normal burial.
4. Ask about any fees that may be added other than plot reservation.
5. Buying plots for multiple family members at once will save money.
